Dom Telford Interview
We caught up with Dom to ask him a few questions about his career and memories he had while playing for Wolves.
Who was the manager when you played for Wolves and how would you best describe his managerial style?
My Uncle Richard was manager of my cousins team, the year above, his managerial style was average but I started every week so I never complained 🙂
Who was the best player you played with when in the Wolves team ?
I would say David Robinson back in the day. Although we had a very good side. Ryan Cattermole was also very good and Matty Farnsworth used to run around smashing everyone so we had a good mix of talent !!
Which team did you support growing up ?
Newcastle United. Less now as I can’t get to many games but I still look for their results first.
Who is the best player you have ever seen live ?
Alan Shearer when I was younger he was unbelievable ! I was also lucky enough to be on the bench against Mbappe vs Monaco in pre-season a couple of years ago. He isn’t that bad either 😉
Who did you idolise growing up and why ?
Alan Shearer, he was a real goalscorer and also Jermaine Defoe. He scored week in week out when I was growing up in the top flight. He wasn’t the tallest so I could probably looked up to him a lot too.
Who is the toughest defender you have ever faced ?
I would have to say Grant Hanley. I played against him for Blackpool at Blackburn in my first season. I was only 17 and he bullied me the whole game.
What is your best season for goals scored ? Both youth and professional ?
I scored 106 in my school year 11 season. I was at Blackpool, Ribblesdale and Lancashire. Not bad ? Professionally it was at Bury last season with 14.
What is the best ground you have ever played at ?
I have to say St James Park Newcastle or my Dad would never speak to me ! I also loved my professional debut at Notts Forest. It was a full house for the first game of the season, that was very special.
What is the best goal you have ever scored and why ?
I’d say MK Dons at home last season. We were 3-1 down with 15 minutes to go. I scored a good goal and we went on to win 4-3 which was a massive result in our promotion push. Link here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se4TEAlPnUI
Chairman Ross thinks this one 😉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdVlkG-qDfI
If you could pick 3 people for dinner, alive or dead, who would it be and why ?
My Grandad, Frank Sinatra and someone who could play the piano. It would be his life long dream sorted !!
How often did you train as a youngster ?
I used to spend hours and hours kicking a ball about, when I was 10 or so it got a little more serious and would train 3/4 times a week at a club but then every spare night with my mates. Much preferred playing football than watching it so if there was a game on I was probably in the garden with a ball.
Chloe wants to know that now you play for Argyle, the greatest team in the world, what are your hopes for them and can you ask Alex Palmer, George Cooper and Ryan Hardie to please sign a permanent deal once their loan spell is up ?
Ha Ha I can do my best !! I am loving it at Plymouth it is a massive club and hopefully be back in League 1 next season, whenever that is ??
What advice would you give a 7 and a 10 year old who want to become Professional players when they are older ?
Enjoy the hard work, have fun at the same time as working on your game and never give up believing ! Anything is possible if you put the hours in and want it enough. Good luck.
Did you parents ever nag you to do your school work first before you were allowed to play football ? Using the " football isn't gong to get you a job when your older ?"
Ha ha I had this all my life ! My mum did her best to make me concentrate in school and so did the teachers. I often got threatened with the “no footie” so I pulled my finger out for a week ha ha. On a serious note it is worth while working hard because it doesn’t last forever if you are lucky enough to make it and if you don’t you will of course need your education.
At what age did you actually realise you could make it in the game as a professional ?
I was at Man Utd at 7/8 and realised I wasn’t too bad. It was at Blackpool though so 14 ish, I was doing really well and scoring loads so realised I had a chance to break through there.
You travelled a long way to sign for Plymouth, what do you like most about Ryan the gaffer ?
Fantastic Dom and thanks so much for taking the time to make the time to answer the players questions for us ? Lets hope we see you on the pitch again at some point very soon.
